Aynu. An Indigenous Culture of Japan - Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món Exhibitions
12/18/2025 - 06/14/2026

The exhibition Aynu. An Indigenous Culture of Japan, presented at the Montcada site of the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món, offers a unique immersion into the history, language, way of life and worldview of the Ainu people, an indigenous community native to the islands of Hokkaidō, Sakhalin and the Kurils. The result of a collaboration between the MuEC and the National Ainu Museum of Shiraoi, it is the first exhibition of its kind to be held in Barcelona and across Spain, as well as the first curatorial project by the Shiraoi museum outside Japan. The exhibition is based on objects collected by Eudald Serra in Hokkaidō in 1947 and unfolds across six thematic sections that explore Ainu culture from tradition to contemporary expressions, combining academic and community-based perspectives. An opportunity to engage with a living heritage that continues to preserve its identity while looking towards the future. .
