CaixaForum Barcelona presents an exhibition devoted to Henri Matisse that offers a broad and contextualised insight into his decisive contribution to modern art. Chez Matisse highlights his innovative approach to colour and his understanding of painting as an autonomous surface, freed from convention. The exhibition also explores the idea of displacement—both emotional and political—present in his work, as an expression of a conscious break with established norms and a constant drive for renewal. Matisse's works, largely drawn from the Centre Pompidou, enter into dialogue with pieces by contemporary and later artists influenced by his legacy. Organised into eight sections, the exhibition traces his evolution and impact, from early twentieth-century European art circles to mid-century American painting.
