Homenatge a Picasso

Homage to Picasso is one of Antoni Tàpies' most iconic works and a unique sculptural ensemble. It stands on Passeig de Picasso, between the Born neighbourhood and the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona.

The work was completed in 1983, two years after the artist received the commission from Barcelona City Council to dedicate a monument to Pablo Picasso as part of the events commemorating the centenary of his birth.

An imposing glass cube floats majestically over a small reflecting pool of water, like a surrealist vision that connects with the Barcelona that bore witness to one of the key periods in Picasso's life. Water cascades delicately down the sides of the cube, lending it an added dynamism and reminding us of the fluid process of creating art.

A fascinating world takes shape inside the cube. Furniture, like a mirror, a sofa and a wardrobe are displayed alongside an iron girder and stacked-up chairs, which are all rooted in Tàpies' trademark style. White sheets and ropes embrace the chairs and act as canvases for phrases attributed to Picasso, such as his categorical statement "Painting is not made to decorate apartments. It's an offensive and defensive weapon against the enemy".

The monument was restored in 2006, to preserve Tàpies' artistic legacy.
