Rosa Sensat i Vilà

Teacher (Masnou, 16th June 1873–Barcelona, 1st October 1961)

Rosa Sensat was the architect of the Catalan state education system, which was an inclusive and successful one. She drew up the syllabus for the Institut de Cultura and the Biblioteca Popular de la Dona.

The Biblioteca Popular de la Dona, which was housed inside the church of Santa Anna until 1936, was the first public library for women in Europe and worked hard to provide them with access to culture, training and information, regardless of their social class. At its peak, there were 30,000 women enrolled in its courses and workshops.

It later became the Institut de Cultura and Biblioteca Popular de la Dona, which was shortened to “La Cultura”. It is still home to a cultural centre and library run by Barcelona Provincial Council and specialises in feminist documents and texts. It still goes by the name of the Biblioteca Popular de la Dona.
