Turandot-Giacomo PucciniClassical music and Opera

“Nessun Dorma” is one of the most famous and emotive operatic arias. It couldn’t be any other way because Puccini wanted “Turandot”, the opera to which “Nessun Dorma” belongs, to be a magnificent work that impacted the viewer from a sensory point of view. “Turandot” was the last opera of the great Italian composer (in fact, he left it unfinished), and reflects the change of artistic direction that permeated the period, a turn toward fantasy and imagination, which became materialised through new trends such as modernism, symbolism and impressionism. The opera premiered in 1926 at the Teatro La Scala in Milan, and two years later it was performed for the first time in the Gran Teatre del Liceu. “Turandot” tells the story of a Chinese princess who had a cold resistance to love and to being loved. Love, however, will triumph at the end, with the prince Calaf, who is in love with the princess. The whole story is set in imperial Beijing, and reflects the pomp and exoticism that the West attached to the mysterious East.
Turandot was the opera chosen to inaugurate the reconstruction of the Liceu Theater on October 7, 1999 after a devastating fire. And now, 20 years later, he reschedules this great work with a version of the visual creator Franc Aleu who looks to the future and who has great voices such as Irénen Theorin and Lise Lindstrom in the role of Princess Turandot and Jorge de León and Gregory Kunde as Calaf.
