The museum’s holdings comprise some of the most important paleontological specimens of invertebrates, and these are on display in the main hall where you will also find the collections of rocks, minerals and plant and animal fossils from the Primary to Quaternary periods. In 1999, the Cardenal Carles Gallery opened. It houses a permanent exhibition which, under the slogan Know Your Land, seeks to develop a keen educational interest in matters concerning the natural sciences.
The museum’s collections now comprise almost 70,000 fossils from every geological period. The documents used to classify and study the specimens are now housed in a specialised library of 13,000 volumes. The Museu Geològic also has a laboratory for the preparation of fossil specimens received by the museum, and a historic archive which is used by researchers from around the world who visit Barcelona to carry out studies in their specialist fields.
