Barcelona has been awarded the "Biosphere World Class Destination" certification by the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR), an entity associated with UNESCO’s World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), sponsored by the United Nations Foundation. The Catalan capital is now the first city in the world to obtain Biosphere certification, reflecting its responsible tourism management and backing up its claim to be a sustainable tourism destination.

The award is recognition of the City and Turisme de Barcelona’s commitment to promoting a balance between residents and visitors in order to ensure sustainability and the continued future success of tourism in Barcelona. Policies aimed at public transport, energy saving measures (efficient lighting) are specific examples of what Barcelona is doing for sustainable tourism.

Despite strong competition from cities likes Paris, Munich and Milan, Barcelona has won the candidature to become the World Mobile Capital until 2018, in addition to its cornerstone: the Mobile World Congress, the world’s premiere exhibition event for mobile technology manufacturers, entrepreneurs, software designers and international corporations.

Barcelona is no stranger to the annual World Mobile Congress, having hosted it since 2006. In February 2011, more than 60,000 people from 200 countries attended, including 3,000 CEOs, government delegations from 131 countries and more than 2,900 media representatives.

The Mobile World Centre will feature permanent and temporary exhibitions -a fusion of culture and technological innovation-, facilities for the development and incubation of mobile solutions, and retail and hospitality venues. Meanwhile, the Mobile World Festival, targeted at the general public, will incorporate a range of activities including sports events, music and art festivals, film awards, applications and technology fairs and much more.

One of Antoni Gaudí’s best kept secrets is the Crypt he designed for the Güell textile colony, which was built at the turn of the 19th century complete with factories, streets, housing, shops and school in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, just outside Barcelona.

The Crypt is considered one of the best examples of the Catalan architect’s early work, with its trencadissos. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, the Crypt and the Colony –also declared of national cultural interest- make a great trip out and are easily reached by train from Barcelona. Visitors get to explore the area with its modernista buildings and Interpretation Centre located inside a former workers’ cooperative.

You see how Colonia Güell came about and models of Gaudí’s church design for the area, which unfortunately never actually got built, as well as a wide variety of tourist services including guided tours, audio guides, dramatised tours, etc. and other general services, including rest areas, car and bus parking, etc.

Barcelona now boasts Spain’s first museum for contemporary figurative art, the just-opened European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM). Its three floors in the highly-fashionable downtown Born area feature abstract, experimental or realism figurative art –a permanent collection of some 200 paintings and 30 sculptures from a variety of international contemporary artists including Carlos Saura, Alessio Bogani, Susanne Hay and Fang Lu, amongst others.  MEAM, an initiative of the Foundation of Arts and Artists, is located in the historic and renovated 1,700 m2 Palau Gomis, which dates back to the Baroque epoch.

Barcelona now boasts a Museum of Motorbikes, hardly surprising considering this city has the most motorbikes per capita in Europe. This new 600 m2 museum located in halls adjacent to the Sant Felip Neri church in the heart of the Gothic Quarter guides visitors through the manufacturing splendour of Catalan produced bikes and legendary brands like Montesa, Bultaco, OSSA and Derbi. Opened earlier this year, the museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions with over 70 bikes, both large cylinder and small. Amongst the showpieces in the current exhibition, visitors will find 70 designs that best represent brands from the 150-or-so manufactures that have had production operations in Catalonia at one time or another.

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, in partnership with the International Center of Photography in New York, will offer visitors to Barcelona a viewing of photographs taken by greats Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and David Seymour ('Chim') during the Spanish Civil War.

On from October 6th to January 15th (2012), the exhibition features a selection of some 4,500 pictures, amongst them images of Federico García Lorca and Ernest Hemingway.

These extraordinary images had been lost since 1939, only to be found in 2007 in the so-called 'Mexican suitcase', undoubtedly the most important group of negatives from the 20th-century to be recovered.

The city’s flamenco showcase dates back to 2006 with top quality billings every year including singers like Paco de Lucía, Los Farruco, or José Estrella. If you are a fan of flamenco or just curious, this is a great opportunity.

Come the weekend of October 22nd/23rd, Barcelona’s architectonic gems will open their doors to the public free of charge. The initiative, 48H Open House Barcelona, is now in its second consecutive edition and forms part of a wider project taking place in cities like London and New York. The idea is to make architecture more popular for the general public, and with more than 150 buildings participating organisers are expecting thousands to take part. The buildings have been chosen because of their design quality and architects, planners and users will be on hand to share their views with visitors. Included are emblematic city buildings and some more tucked away ones including a library, private houses, an office building, a hotel and group of historic buildings -some of these not open to the public during the rest of the year. This year’s programme will include l’Arc de Triomf and Torre d’Aigües de Catalana de Gas.
