  • Pique Dame The Queen of Spades Tchaikovsky

Pique Dame The Queen of Spades Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed this opera in just forty-four days, as a commission for the Russian Imperial Theatres in 1890. Based on a short story by Pushkin and with a libretto by the composer's brother Modest, The Queen of Spades tells the tragedy of the gambling-obsessed young Hermman, who ends up sacrificing his beloved Lisa and falling victim to her ghost. Tchaikovsky recreates the musical forms of the 18th century and sprinkles them with references to popular and religious music to create a score which, together with Eugene Onegin, is one of the composer's greatest contributions to the genre of opera. Now we have the chance to enjoy this at Gran Teatre del Liceu, with a lavish staging by Gilbert Deflo and under the baton of Dmitry Jurowski.
