Barcelona and its surrounding area offer a wide range of wine tourism activities to share with the family. Winery tours with the kids as well as activities, trails, excursions and experiences that appeal to all ages. Here are a few that will give you the opportunity to discover everything wine culture has to offer.
Balloon adventure exploring Mas de Sant Iscle
Can you picture yourself enjoying a bird's eye view of a beautiful vineyard landscape in a balloon? There couldn't be a more original way of discovering a historic wine-producing region in Catalonia, like the Pla de Bages. And the Mas de Sant Iscle winery is of the same opinion. It organises balloon rides that invite families to enjoy this amazing adventure. The meeting point is the Parc de l'Agulla, from where you'll take flight and enjoy superlative views of the plain, the majestic mountains of Montserrat and the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park. At the end of the flight, you'll return to the starting point and make your way to the Mas de Sant Iscle winery, just over a kilometre away, which is open to visitors.
Experience the Heretat, family tour of the Llopart winery
Young and old will have a wonderful time if they sign up for the tour organised by Llopart to find out what it's like to live among the vineyards at their estate, the Heretat. The meeting point is the Can Llopart farmhouse, in the municipality of Subirats, which boasts one of the prettiest, picture-postcard views of the Penedès with the mountains of Montserrat in the background. The tour of the vineyards is complemented by a walk around the yard with its hens, and inside the farmhouse, where there are some old farmers' tools on display and a small cellar. The experience invites you to learn more about the wine-maker's craft across the generations. And to round off the tour, you'll share a glass of wine with a snack outside the farmhouse. The kids can enjoy a tasting of locally produced chocolate and grape juice.
The Restless Grape: theatre and wines at the Alta Alella winery
Theatre is an artistic expression that fulfils us and cultivates the soul. At the Alta Alella winery, they use theatre to teach families with kids about the culture of wine in a fun, accessible way. Its wine tourism offer also includes a theatre adaptation of Elisenda Guiu's short story The Restless Grape, which is performed inside the winery. The actor will explain how wine is made, from the vineyard, where the grapes begin to grow, to the winery, where the wine is aged and bottled. The visit ends with a grape juice tasting for the kids and wines and cavas for the adults.
Sweet treats and chocolate at the Codorníu experience
Barcelona has played an important role in the history of chocolate and its introduction to the Old World. After all, in 1520, Christopher Columbus brought the first unprocessed cocoa pods into the port of the Catalan capital, which he had obtained from the Aztecs. Against this background, Codorníu brings you a tasting of wine, and grape juice for the kids, all kinds of chocolates and sweet treats: the perfect pairing for the most discerning palates. The experience also includes a great choice of traditional pastries, cakes and chocolates, made by a pastry chef that will satisfy your sweet tooth.
Bird watching among the vines at Sumarroca
Ornithologists can identify the birds flying overhead just by hearing their song or seeing their outline. Sumarroca invites you take a walk through the estate, led by an expert who will show you and tell you about the different species that are migrating or are part of our natural habitat. The experience begins in Monistrol d'Anoia and explores the vineyards as far as the viewing point, where you'll be able to see birds of prey in flight. The bravest among you will have the opportunity to touch or hold one with a protective glove. The activity begins with a hearty, farmhouse breakfast, featuring cured sausage and bread rubbed with tomato, cava for the adults and juice for the kids.
Tapas, wine and grape juice pairing with the Torres family
Four wines (grape juice for the kids) and four tapas. The Torres family introduces the concept of pairing in this experience, to show how the sum of different flavours can become a complete sensory experience. In this case, the tasting consists of tapas made with local produce and four of the family's wines. The experience includes a tour of the Mas La Plana vineyards, the Waltraud winery, and this combination of products to discover perfect harmony.
Learning and nature at Can Calopa's rural classroom
Collserola is one of the natural areas closest to Barcelona, and has so many things to do that you won't have time to fit them all in. You can enjoy the activities at the rural classroom, the Aula Rural, at Can Calopa. It is an open space which is part of the cooperative winery, L'Olivera, and raises awareness of the natural and rural heritage of the area. It also runs educational activities about biodiversity, agroecology, rural life and the social and solidarity economy. The project is fully committed to peri-urban farming as an engine for social change. Its activities invite you to be a farmer for a day, or a shepherd among the vines, with the emphasis always on educating and informing. The activities end with a tasting of the products made on the estate.
