Tibidabo, the magic mountain 02/02/2015
It isnt surprising that the Barcelona locals nicknamed Tibidabo "the magic mountain". Standing 515 metres high, it's the tallest point on the Collserola Ridge and its distinctive outline features on many postcards of the city. Don't forget your camera if you decide to go to the top and explore; you'll be able to take shots of Barcelona at your feet and enjoy a bird's-eye view of its landmark buildings.
History, nature and fun come together on one of the Catalan capital's most unforgettable routes. The trip up to Tibidabo is a wonderful experience. Although you can go by car, the use of public transport is the most recommended and comfortable to reach the park.
Once you've arrived, the fun can really begin. Welcome to the Tibidabo Amusement Park, a century-old funfair that opened in 1901. It has more than 25 rides and attractions, entertainments, costumed characters and performers, restaurants, picnic areas and the finest panoramic views of the city. You can buy your ticket and travel pass at the click of a button from VisitBarcelona Tickets; you'll get a better deal and you won't have to queue.
The park is certainly one of the most magical places on the mountain with its modern rides and attractions. The iconic Red Aeroplane and the watchtower, the "Atalaia", with its breathtaking views of Barcelona from a height of 550 metres above sea level, exist alongside state-of-the-art rides and attractions. The park is set out on five levels, and highlights include the roller coaster and the Tibidabo Express, which will whizz you along at 50 kilometres an hour. The amazing Museu d'Autòmats is one of the most beautiful and highly prized attractions in the park. The museum houses a wonderful collection of early-20th-century automata and coin-operated figures. When visitors see these antique figures in motion they not only have fun, but want to learn more about their history. The story goes that when Walt Disney visited the park, he was so taken with an automaton that he wrote a blank cheque to make sure the park owners would sell it to him. But he didn't get his wish; there are some things that money can't buy… even if your surname is Disney.
There are many restaurants and food stalls around the park but you can also bring your own food and sit in one of the picnic areas. So now you know… don't forget your tablecloth, picnic basket and whatever your fancy so you can savour Barcelona at your feet.
