Pastels: the resurgence of an art formExhibitions and activities
10/03/2019 - 01/05/2020

Fundación MAPFRE is putting on an exhibition with a difference; an exhibition based on one of the materials used throughout the entire history of art: pastels. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that the use of pastels became an art form in its own right, independent of all the other techniques such as oil painting, in that quality of the material was a perfect match for a certain concept of modernity that was surfacing at that time.

This exhibition highlights the main stages pastel art has been through and its most outstanding figures, the ones who turned into an art form in its own right. Boudin, Redon, Degas and Manet, are among the artists who endowed the use of pastels with an innovative status as opposed to the later generation that included Picasso, Miró, Blanchard and Theo van Doesburg.
