Good restaurants abound in Barcelona; it's a gourmet's paradise! In fact it is the only city outside France to have been named Gourmande city, one of the highest accolades in the culinary world. But Barcelona's love of food goes deep into its very culture: the Mediterranean Diet –the basis of dishes here- has become synonymous with quality of life, choice and vibrancy. To celebrate the importance of gastronomy to Barcelona, the city council has declared 2005 the Year of Gastronomy, with some 200 events from March 2005 to March 2006. Organised by Barcelona city council with the support of the council's Economic Promotion and City Markets areas and technical support from Turisme de Barcelona, the event has widespread support from the region's top chefs, restaurants, gastronomy associations and other related organisations. There's something for everyone on this mouth-watering yearlong programme ... from wine tasting to cooking tips by top chefs in city markets.... wine tasting to street fairs. In Barcelona and Catalonia the food sectors are particularly strong, with Alimentaria -one of the biggest food fairs in the world - held here every two years. Trade fairs, cinema and music festivals on cuisine, congresses and international symposia, festivals, public cooking displays, cooking competitions and even a book fair on gastronomy, and specially created dishes too.... This is just a flavour of what the Year of Food, Cuisine and Gastronomy is about.

Barcelona's Alimentaria is a giant of a trade fair for the food and beverage sector. And this year of gastronomy means to highlight other food fairs like ExpoSalud (promoting health foods), Biocultura (showcasing eco-foods), a Chocolate Trade Fair (the first-ever held in Spain) and a new show called "Barcelona Tastes" (featuring quality foods and related sectors).

This Year of Gastronomy is set to bring congresses to Barcelona, too: the 3rd World Pasta Congress ... the National Congress of Baking and Confectionery and the 4th International Mediterranean Food Symposium. But there'll also be meetings on the likes of fresh foods for the catering and events sectors or a French gourmet week.

Barcelona has recently won the candidature to host the largest annual mobile phone event in the world -the 3GSM World Congress. The first Barcelona 3GSM World Congress will be held February 13-16, 2006.

Why did you choose to move the 3GSM World Congress to Barcelona?

Well we had 12 great years in Cannes , but we found we had outgrown the venue and facilities. It had also become expensive. So we set out a series of parameters that measured the suitability of possible destinations and narrowed the list down to Barcelona , Madrid , Lisbon , Rome and Cannes . We wanted a city in the south of Europe because of the climate, but one that had the capacity and quality facilities to deal with an event like ours.

What swayed you in favour of Barcelona in the end?

What really swung it was the depth of support offered by Barcelona’s institutions and entities, namely from the Catalonian government, the city council, Fira de Barcelona, Turisme de Barcelona, the Restaurant and Hotels Guild. We felt a real interest to host our event from the whole of Barcelona’s key players and that was the key. The capacity of the hotels sector and the trade fair facilities were also very important.

Just how big is the 3GSM World Congress?

Some 34,000 people attended the Cannes event in 2005, but our research suggests that in Barcelona the figure could rise to 41,200 attendees plus spouses. Taking into account the general growth in this sector and the positive reaction from exhibitors during site visits to the change in venue, we think we might even exceed this number and w calculate the exhibitors will rise from 670 to 800 this year. In terms of economic impact, the Exhibition moves some 100 m €s and Barcelona’s hotels and restaurants will certainly notice the effect.

What goes into a 3GSM World Congress?

Well, there’s an Exhibition, a Conference, a Leadership Summit, an Awards Ceremony, a Fashion Show and an Auction; this will all be going on in Fira de Barcelona’s main Montjuïc 1 (M1) trade fair facilities.

Why did you choose M1 rather than, say, Barcelona’s M2 venue, which is perhaps more focused on professional trade fairs like yours?

We have come from a very stylish city like Cannes, but we felt M1 would be just as symbolic and glamorous as Cannes was. We will be using all the M1 halls, with the Exhibition taking up most of the space. In fact we have nearly sold all our available space, and all the prime areas. The Conference is going on in Halls 2 and 5, where we have the Fira’s permanent auditorium and another 2,000-seater that we are building especially. We plan to use the Palau Nacional’s Sala Oval for our Leadership Summit, which brings together 250 of the sector’s leading players, and the Awards Ceremony. The Fashion Show is 90% technology and 10% fashion; it’s the glamorous face of Congress and an opportunity to show off all the latest technology on a catwalk. GSM World Congress also has an Auction, which is where delegates bid for items like a Barça soccer shirt –the money goes to charity.

How long do you plan to hold 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona ?

© 3GSM

Well, we have a rolling contract, but the idea is to stay here as long as our exhibitors and clients enjoy it.

How about the corporate side of 3GSM World Congress?

Corporate parties will be going on all over the city and some of them are really big splashes. But in a more general sense, participants will be keeping the city’s restaurants busy throughout the event. We’ll be recommending certain areas in the city to make for, say the Olympic Port, one night and another zone on another night. We’ve got a special deal with the Restaurants Guild meaning our participants will get preferential treatment in terms of table reservations or a complementary glass of Cava.

Networking is a big thing at 3GSM World Congress

Yes, it is very important. All the big players will be here like handset manufacturers, those that make chips, content providers ... and their objective is to get business done, so we’ll be setting up lots of areas for networking like the Fira Village in the area between the Fira Halls. There’ll also be a Spanish Pavilion to provide a focal point for Spanish VIPs and media.

The congress, conventions and incentive travel sectors in Barcelona recorded their best ever year in terms of delegate numbers last year, with a rise of 26% to stand at 360,335.

These excellent results came off the back of strong growth in the corporate meetings and product presentations markets, which grew 41,6% to stand at 166,627 people. Meanwhile the congress market also improved to stand at 193,708 delegates, a 15% rise on 2003’s results.

Corporate meetings fared particularly well last year, especially due to four international car presentations and a huge meeting by Herbalife, with 20,000 participants. Last year’s Forum Barcelona had a considerable impact on the congress sector’s results bringing in 60,000 delegates from 50 congresses.

Overall the number of overnights rose by almost 25% and the number of meetings totalled 1,146, a rise of 0.6% on 2003.

The vice-president of Turisme de Barcelona, Jordi Portabella, says these excellent results in congresses and conventions shows "the consolidation of Barcelona’s position as a business travel and meetings city, in a year that Barcelona is also holding the EIBTM trade fair, a world leader in the meetings sector, and just a year from Barcelona’s hosting of 3GSM World Congress, the most important trade fair for the mobile telephone sector.”

Last year some 69% of all meetings and 77.5% of delegates were from outside Spain, making 2004 the most international year for the corporate and congress sectors in Barcelona.

Convention centres saw a rise of five points in the number of meetings held in these venues. A third of all congresses in Barcelona last year came from the medical and healthcare sectors, while in the corporate market the pharmaceuticals sector accounted for most events.

The average length of meetings remained similar to 2003, although there was an increase of 3% in the number of congresses lasting more than five days. The Forum brought about a rise in the average number of delegates per congress, but the trend towards bigger meetings was also seen in the corporate sector, with a notable increase in events for 500-999 participants in both cases. The distribution of the meetings according to their size is now similar to that of 2000, one of Barcelona’s most successful years for corporate and congress events.

Interestingly, Barcelona held two Chinese conventions last year, highlighting an important new market for Barcelona.

The economic impact of the meetings sector in Barcelona rose by 21.4%, with the corporate and incentives increasing by 29.2% and congresses up by 5.7%. Barcelona Convention Bureau again played a major role in capturing congresses; the overall contribution of BCB was 8.29% to the total number of meetings and 22.73% to the total number of participants.

Importantly, last year BCB confirmed 97 future meetings, with a total of 129,902 delegates, 519,070 overnights and a total impact of 233.1 million Euro.

The Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB), opened just last autumn, has become one of the city’s most exciting congress venues. And the CCIB has recently strengthened its management team with two new appointments: Oscar Cerezales who becomes Sales Director and Jordi Novellas, the new Association Meetings Manager. Over the next few years CCIB already has a busy congress calender confirming the centre’s attraction for professional meetings organisers.
