Inside the building of the medieval commodity exchange, the Llotja de Mar, you can visit the art academy, the Reial Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi. It was founded in the18th century to promote the teaching of fine arts, and some of the most important Catalan artists of the 19th and 20th centuries received their training inside its classrooms.

ADVANTAGES:

The museum of the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts is the direct descendant of the first art museum in Catalonia founded by the Llotja art school. The museum was set up with an educational purpose and brought together works that students – including interns from Madrid, Rome and Paris, and prize-winning artists – could copy and were set as exercises by the teaching staff.

The art collection comprises work by artists of the calibre of Damià Campeny, Marià Fortuny, Claudio Lorenzale and Pau Milà i Fontanals, making it a benchmark of Catalan art of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Acadèmia de Belles Arts, which currently occupies the second floor of the Llotja building, is steeped in the academic tradition. Its walls and corridors are lined with paintings and sculptures by the main Catalan artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. They include a scene from The Slaughter of the Innocents by Antonio Solà (1780-1861), one of the foremost Catalan sculptors of his day.

The guided tour includes the hall, gallery of realist paintings (featuring works depicting scenes from everyday life and social criticism in the 19th century), the corridor, the meeting hall and the Fortuny gallery.
