From June this year, Barcelona will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Cerdà Plan, the project that marked the beginning of the future Eixample district which laid the foundations of modern Barcelona. The gradual industrialisation and growth in the city’s population made it necessary to look for a solution beyond the city walls that encircled in the city and in the middle of the 19th century still gave Barcelona the appearance of a fortified medieval town. The engineer, planner and politician Ildefons Cerdà (1815-1876) designed a grid system which had, and still has, as its key element residential blocks measuring 113.33 metres on each side, with their corners chamfered at a 45º angle to ease pedestrian and traffic mobility. The blocks were originally intended to be open on two, three or four of their sides and with gardens in their interior courtyards. Although the Cerdà Plan wasn’t fully adhered to – the height and depth of the buildings were increased, and the interior courtyards made private –, its most fundamental aspects still shape the city today.

The programme of events marking the 150th anniversary commences on 7th June and ends in June 2010.

CaixaForum will be hosting an exhibition about Andrea Palladio from 19th May to 6th September 2009. From 2nd July to 18th October, the centre will be hosting Maurice de Vlaminck. A Fauve Instinct. The exhibition focuses on the essence of the work of Vlaminck (1876-1958), a key figure in the renewal of European avant-garde painting at the beginning of the 20th century.

From 7th July to 27th September, the MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) will be hosting This is War! Robert Capa at Work which brings together 150 photographs taken by Capa when he was working as a photojournalist during the 1930s and 40s: images which made him one of the most famous photographers of the 20th century. On the same dates, the museum will be staging Gerda Taro, presenting for the first time in Spain a retrospective exhibition of works by the photographer Gerda Taro, a female pioneer in war photojournalism. The show brings together 83 photographs from the Spanish Civil War and other documentary material.

The Fundació Joan Miró will be presenting Miró-Dupin. Poetry from 16th June to 18th October. The exhibition is being held as part of the commemorations of the 25th anniversary of Miró’s death and looks at the close relationship between Joan Miró and Jacques Dupin. From 19th June to 4th October, the exhibition Murals will feature works by artists from different countries who work directly on walls.

La Pedrera, Fundació Caixa de Catalunya, will be staging an exhibition on R.B. Kitaj from 8th June to 13th September and another on Arístide Maillol, from 19th October until early January 2010.

MACBA Collection: a major exhibition devoted to the museum’s new acquisitions, featuring works by Constant, Hans Haacke, Matt Mullican, Lawrence Weiner, David Lamelas, Palle Nielsen, Rita McBride, Dan Graham... From 22nd September to 10th January 2010 the museum will be hosting Modernologies, contemporary artists in search of modernity and modernism:a project examining modernity as a promising socio-political movement which aspired to form a universal language based on the underlying notion of progress and continual development.

The temporary exhibitions at the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona) will include Gangs of the 80s, from 26th May to 30th August, and The Jazz Century, which will give the public the opportunity to assess the influence of jazz on the entire spectrum of the arts, and will be on from 21st July to 18th October 2009.

Barcelona Airport’s new passenger terminal, T1, is the most spectacular project undertaken in Barcelona in recent years.
The terminal will come into operation on 17th June 2009 and consolidate Barcelona’s position as a major air hub in the Mediterranean and the south of Europe.
The figures for the new terminal speak for themselves: it will handle over 100,000 passengers a day, and will be able to operate 90 flights an hour and cater to 55 million passengers a year. The terminal will have 166 check-in desks, 101 gates, 43 fingers, 15 baggage reclaim carousels, ...

The architectural project is characterised by the natural light which floods into all the passenger areas. A representative and unique design which is bound to set the benchmark for future airport projects.

The Star Alliance partners will be the first airlines to operate from the new terminal: they will make their maiden flights on 17th June. The airlines from the OneWorld alliance will move to the terminal in late September, and Sky Team will use the terminal from December onwards.

Flight operators that don’t belong to these alliances will continue to use the present terminal, which will be renamed T2.
