The exhibition Barcelona & Modernity. Picasso, Gaudí, Miró, Dalí (1868-1939) opened at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on 4th March and will run until 3rd June. The exhibition provides the American public with the opportunity to see the art produced in Barcelona and Catalonia over seven decades, between the Revolution of September 1868 and the end of the Civil War in 1939.

The exhibition features over 300 works by a broad spectrum of Catalan artists grouped together chronologically and thematically. This is a complex, wide-ranging exhibition which brings together valuable major works on loan from public museums and institutions in Catalonia (such as the Museu Nacionald’Art de Catalunya which has loaned some 50 works from its holdings), the rest of the world and many private collections.

Barcelona 1900 will be the title of the exhibition the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will be hosting in autumn 2007 which will recreate the history of the city at the turn of the 19th century.
The idea put forward by the museum, which is one of the most visited in Europe, is to provide a historic overview of the city as it was between the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century.
Some 300 works from the collections of New York’s Metropolitan Museum, Barcelona’s MNAC, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and Cau Ferrat in Sitges, together with works of art from private collections, will give an insight into turn-of-the-century Barcelona.

The exhibition will be on show at the Van Gogh Museum from 21st September 2007 until 20th January 2008.

Also worth mentioning is the temporary loan agreement which brought 73 works – 11 paintings and 62 drawings – from private collections to the museum in March 2006. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to view these works until December 2007.

The exhibition of works by the sculptor Claes Oldenburg will be on show until 4th June at the Fundació Joan Miró. The Foundation will be hosting a retrospective of works by Sean Scully from 29th June until 30th September. The exhibition will feature paintings, drawings and photographs displayed together, enabling us to see the consistency that gives meaning to his art.

From 24th April until the end of April 2008, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya will be hosting the exhibition Drawings by Santiago Rusiñol from the Department of Drawings and Prints of the MNAC. The exhibition presents a selection of about 30 works, representative of the different periods in Rusiñol’s artistic career.

Also worth highlighting is the exhibition Modern Posters from the Collections of the Department of Drawings and Prints of the MNAC which features over 80 posters showing the impact that European advertising models and designs by great artists had on the birth and subsequent development of this advertising art in Catalonia. The exhibition will run from July to September 2007.

The Passion Façade of the Sagrada Família has been floodlit to mark the 125th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone. This means that both façades of the church will now be floodlit every evening.

This is one of the highlight events marking the 125th anniversary of the Sagrada Família. Throughout the year, different activities will be held to commemorate the inception of the church, such as the dedication of a sculpture of Saint George, by the sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs.

At the beginning of June, the Sagrada Familia will be hosting an exhibition of works by the Japanese architect Kenji Imai, a great admirer of Gaudí’s. A series of lectures about Gaudí will also be held to mark the occasion.

The commemorative year will end on 19th March 2008 with a solemn mass inside the church.

Pre-booking is now essential for all groups. Groups paying in advance will be granted preferential admission.

Entrances to the church are organised in the following way:

  • Entrance for individual visitors: Ticket offices on the Passion Façade. Carrer Sardenya.
  • Entrance for school groups (pre-bookings essential): Gate to the school building (Les Escoles) on Carrer Sardenya
  • Group entrance: Ticket office on the Nativity Façade. Carrer Marina

Buses must set down passengers on Carrer Marina and pick up passengers on Carrer Sardenya.

The Guide to the History of El Call will be published by Barcelona Municipal Council at the same time. Its contents have been put together by the Museu d’Història in association with the city’s Jewish communities.

It then focuses on the history of music in Western cultures: starting with ancient civilisations, it looks at polyphony, the new music of the baroque, classicist and romanticist periods, the sound industry in the 19th century and the new styles and technologies of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In April, the Barcelona Metro launched a pilot scheme during which the service will operate non-stop throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning. The scheme will run until October and covers the whole network which consists of nine lines, six of them (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 and L11) operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona and the other three (L6, L7 and L8) by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Trains will run every 15 minutes between 2am and 5am on all lines, except line L8 where frequency will be every 20 minutes.

The new timetable has made it possible to launch the Metronit programme, a series of cultural activities associated with the night-time metro service.

In the long term, the scheme aims to extend the Saturday service throughout the year and include Friday nights.
