Barcelona is a city that is open to the sea. The beaches of the Catalan capital, which stretch for over 4,5 kilometres, are one of the biggest recreational areas which are used by the local community and visitors alike. The public transport and bicycle-lane network means they are just a few minutes away from anywhere in the city. The beaches feature all the necessary amenities and services so they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways at any time of the year.

Turisme de Barcelona has created the Barcelona Beach programme in order to promote the beaches of the Catalan capital as a tourist attraction and a complement to the city’s cultural offering. The project has launched with the publication of a leaflet in two separate editions in Catalan/English and Spanish/French which describe the wide range of services and activities to be found on the city’s seafront and beaches.

The Turisme de Barcelona website has added a new section for cinema lovers.

As part of this interconnected framework of city, tourism and film, Turisme de Barcelona and the Escola Universitària d’Hoteleria i Turisme CETT-UB, are launching Movie Walks, a series of themed itineraries, based on the transfer of knowledge from a research project about four films shot in Barcelona: Manual of Love 2: New Chapters (2006); Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2005); The Spanish Apartment (2001) and All About My Mother (1998). Forty-one scenes in total, set in the city’s streets and neighbourhoods, and information designed to help lovers of the Seventh Art plan their visit to Barcelona based around the four films, some of which were true phenomena at the time.

The exhibition gallery is on the ground floor of the house and is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm and on Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 3pm.

There are also guided tours of the building which give a genuine insight into the modernista movement and include the hall, Antoni Amatller’s photography studio and a chocolate tasting in the original kitchen.

The tours, which take place from Monday to Friday in the morning, are in Catalan, Spanish and English and cost 7 euros. Places are limited and pre-booking is essential.

Eusebi Güell commissioned Antoni Gaudí to design the Palau Güell as his new home on Carrer Nou de la Rambla. The Palau Güell is the only completed building by Gaudí not to have undergone subsequent alterations and in 1984 it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Restoration work on the Palau began in 2004 in order to preserve the building and keep it in a good state of repair.

Barcelona Regional Council has decided to reopen the newly restored part of the building before the entire project is completed, to give visitors a sneak preview of Gaudí’s major landmark.

The areas that are open to the public are the main façade, ground floor and basement which was used as the stables and staff quarters.

The Palau Güell is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Admission is free.

Barcelona has refurbished the building known as the “Alchemist’s House” to convert it into an interpretation centre in the city’s former Jewish Quarter, the Call Jueu, in order to foster the study of the contribution of the medieval Jewish community to the city.

The interpretation centre contains a variety of objects from Jewish culture such as vases, sculptures from the East and other small objects. Three informative panels explain how the district has evolved, and visitors can see some of the remains of the foundations of the 14th-century Hebrew dwelling under glass panes in the floor.

The centre seeks to bring Jewish culture to a wider audience and explain its contribution to the city’s history, as well as to promote research into a community that was fully incorporated into the economic, social and cultural fabric of Barcelona during the Middle Ages.

The project submitted by the British architect Norman Foster has been chosen for the refurbishment and expansion of F.C. Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.

The renovated stadium will offer a unique and distinct image of FC Barcelona, while improving a wide variety of services and facilities.

The façade will be the main focus of the project, which Foster says was inspired by Gaudí and the identifiable colours of the team and the city. A mosaic of polycarbonate and glass panels will create an effect of changing colours and reflections making it possible to use the outer façade for light shows, projecting moving colour images in the vicinity of the stadium.

The seating capacity of the stadium will increase to 118,000 following the renovation project.

Work is expected to be completed by 2013 and has been designed to ensure minimum inconvenience is caused to the everyday running of the club.

The Barcelona Metro runs non-stop throughout Saturday night making it possible to enjoy Barcelona’s nightlife and culture to the full. The metro is a convenient, cheap and safe way of getting around the city.

The scheme covers the whole network which consists of nine lines, six of them (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 and L11) operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona and the other three (L6, L7 and L8) by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Trains run throughout Saturday night with a frequency between 15 and 20 minutes.

The metro runs from 5am to midnight from Monday to Thursday and on Sunday. On Fridays and public holidays the running times are extended until 2am.

Last April saw the opening of the new purpose-built cruise terminal A on the Moll Adossat in Barcelona harbour. It replaces the old terminal which stood on the same site, and has been designed for state-of-the-art mega cruise liners.

The terminal covers a surface area of 6,200 m2 and will be run by the company Creuers del Port de Barcelona S.A.

The new terminal A has been built according to the latest requirements of safety and comfort with a modern architectural design.

Getting to Barcelona while enjoying the advantages of high-speed travel is now a reality.

Madrid is the main originating city and destination of this new transport link with a journey time of just 2 hours 38 minutes. However, the high-speed-train network also serves many other cities and you can choose between a number of originating cities and destinations, such as Tarragona, Lleida, Zaragoza, Madrid, Seville, Malaga,...

It has opened new possibilities which will make it possible to put together tailor-made itineraries combining a number of these cities. Work on the line that will eventually connect Barcelona with the European high-speed network and complete the service is already underway and it will be operative in a few years’ time.

The initial service runs 17 trains in both directions (Madrid-Barcelona, Barcelona-Madrid). A single ticket from Madrid costs 102.10 euros, but prices on the internet can be as low as 40.80 euros. Other attractions of the new AVE are the running times, from six in the morning until midnight, and punctuality rates of almost 100%.
