  • Santa Eulàlia Festival

    Santa Eulàlia Festival

The origins of the Festes of Santa Eulàlia are rooted in the legend of Barcelona's second patron saint and are a focal point for the city's main winter celebrations. This year the festivities are split over two different weekends: the actual Festes of Santa Eulàlia run from 9 to 12 February while, between 16 and 18 February, Llum BCN is the city's festival of light that is now in its seventh edition.
The Festes of Santa Eulàlia represent the city's reconnection with its traditions rooted in popular culture, with marked childhood and feminine influences. It's the time to see the city's emblematic eagle figure enact the solemn Protocols de l'Àliga, to launch the castellera human tower-building season, to marvel at giants parading through the heart of the city or experience the intensity of the correfoc fire-cracker troupes. Another of the Catalan traditional emblems, the mulasses or mules, will also take center stage, with an exhibition to mark the 450th anniversary of the Mulassa de Barcelona. Among many activities, we would also highlight a performance of traditional mediaeval dances which encourages active audience participation.
This year the Llum BCN festival moves to a new home, the district of Poblenou, on the weekend following Santa Eulàlia. Over a dozen well-known Spanish and international artists will present their ideas for transforming spaces by using light. To demonstrate the city's emergent creativity and talent, students from fourteen Architecture, Art and Design schools have prepared special installations based on the creative use of illumination.
