Barcelona World RaceSports
12/2018 - 04/2019

Close your eyes and picture yourself sailing some of the most inhospitable seas on the planet and withstanding extreme weather conditions with the sole aim of crossing the finishing line and overcoming the most rigorous yachting challenge. The round-the-world trip starts here with the Barcelona World Race!
Between the end of December 2018 and the beginning of 2019, Barcelona will be hosting its fourth Barcelona World Race, the only two-handed, non-stop round-the-world race. This extreme endurance test is raced in IMOCA Open 60 yachts, the Formula 1 of the sea. Spectators will also be able to follow the adventure on the website via live video links with the crews from anywhere on the planet.
This year, the participants will continue to collaborate in the scientific projects coordinated by UNESCO and will gather data throughout their voyage (measurement of salinity levels of the oceans, concentration of microplastics). This will enable the crews to make a comparative analysis with the data gathered on the previous race, consolidating on the scientific results and drawing more reliable conclusions.
The organisers of the Barcelona World Race, the Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing – FNOB, also run educational programmes, an R + D and business hub, scientific projects associated with oceans, and sports programmes to disseminate ocean sailing competitions and their technological requirements (Base Oceánica).
