III Barcelona Burlesque Festival

From 22nd to 26th May, the Paral•lel once again will be filled with lace, boas and feathers. Seduction, glamour, humour and colour will all be present at El Molino, with performances by two of the leading stars of international burlesque: Miss Banbury Cross and Dirty Martini.

Special names of the Molino team will also be present (Lady Molino -Vanesa Garcia-, Aina Montmartre -Aina Torné-, Laia Mora, Marta Alert, Juli Bellot, Roger Salvany and Levgen Tykhonkov), Amador Rojas, the “flamenco dancer” who will express the essence of flamenco with sensuality, together with the always warm welcome by the incomparable Merche Mar.

The festival will have a traditional format of burlesque performances, consisting of different numbers lasting between 3 and 7 minutes, which will explain a story, a drama, a personal artistic performance with the backup of visual arts. It is impossible to define a burlesque performance, as each is unique, a mix of vaudeville music hall, with complicity, cabaret, sensuality.

Pasolini Roma

With this exhibition, visitors can submerge themselves in the importance which the capital of Italy felt for Pasolini. Beyond the backdrop of his novels and films, Rome was a permanent field of study and reflection for this great author. Pasolini experienced a great love story with the city, with everything this brings. This is why we can talk of a Rome before and after Pasolini, as his works created a new imaginary of the city. This exhibition analyzes all these aspects and has been co-produced by four cultural European institutions.

Il turco in Italia - Rossini

For the first time in El Liceu, “Dramma Buffo” is performed in two acts. It is a frivolous, agile comedy of intrigue; a spirit that is covered perfectly in Rossini’s score. Il turco narrates the adventures of the Turkish prince Selim and his favourite concubine, the gypsy Zaida, along with the interference of the frivolous Fiorilla. It all turns out well in the end and the lovers make it up.

©Xavier Marcadé
Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen… are all artists with something in common: they all performed in our country thanks to Doctor Music concert promoters. We now have the opportunity to relive them and to run through the iconography of Doctor Music, in an exhibition covering 30 years of live music. The exhibition entitled “Born to Múúúú. Doctor Music, 30 years” presents a collection of images, historic posters, tickets, screenings of legendary concerts and illustrations. The section that goes over the best moments of the three years of the Doctor Music Festival in Escalarre, is also outstanding. A tribute to the company founded by Neo Sala and which undoubtedly marked a historical turning point in the history of music in Spain.

Yo Picasso. Autorretratos

Yo, Picasso. 1901
Picasso painted self-portraits practically all his life. Now, at last we have the opportunity to contemplate the first monographic exhibition of his self-portraits. For this genius of art, the portrait has two tasks: firstly to leave a testimonial of biographic facts; and secondly, to project thoughts, reflections or amusement. This means that his own image has become a laboratory of various formal tests and through this we can contemplate and understand these different phases and concepts. The exhibition is sponsored by ENDESA.

The strength of Macaco is once again evident in his new album “El murmullo del fuego”. It went straight to number 1 in iTunes the same day it was released. Perhaps it has something to do with the good measure of joy and light in the songs of his new album, which is so necessary in times of darkness. The new tracks go for a natural, simple, almost hypnotic sound, without losing his ethno-cultural roots of reggae, his main source of inspiration. After an extensive tour, he is now in Barcelona within the Festival del Mil·lenni.

Chema Madoz. Ars combinatoria

Chema Madoz (Madrid, 1958) is one of the most personal and innovative names of Spanish contemporary photography. His work, influenced by Surrealism and visual poetry, composes a magical and complex universe, where objects are never what they seem (or they seem not to be). Madoz, who always works in black and white, plays with perceptions of who observes his images, that go beyond reality. In spite of the fact that in some of his initial works, a human figure appears, since the nineties, Madoz has focused his work on the photography of objects, in which he modifies or stresses some of their qualities converting the works into true, visual poems.
The exhibition, with over seventy pieces, chronologically goes over his career, with the first photographs of the 80s until his latest works, including his collaboration with the poet Joan Brossa and his work regarding the poetry of Salvador Espriu.

Cuentos cruentos

"Cuentos cruentos" is a musical performance with an irreverent and contemporary view of old stories. The members of the performance embark on an urban world, which is terribly routine, where characters do not have a fairytale life: the seven dwarfs are unemployed, the three pigs cannot find a decent place to live, Cinderella is obese and can't afford glass shoes, Alice is lost because of the pills from Wonderland; a dog with a vocation as artist signing as Van Dog, etc. These stories are skilfully told by singers and musicians, causing hilarity among the audience. Cuentos cruentos is a fresh, new performance with magnetic energy.

These works from the bottom of the Josep Suñol Collection include texts by José Delgado (alias Pepe Illo) and are now exhibited in a predominant way to be able to admire them directly and on their own.

This photographer and art director, Jaume de Laiguana believes in the beauty of the imperfect. For him, each photograph is a project that starts from zero, and with which he starts a new way of learning. The exhibition "Jaime de Laiguana. 1997-2002 in retrospect" has been organized by the Catalan Government and shows 159 photographs in large format of the artist with this special aesthetic view and clear social commitment. Many of his works show a special ability to convert commissioned works into author works. Other projects are also included which reflect social problems, the main purpose of which is to make us reflect.

50 years of the Museu Picasso in Barcelona: Origins

On the 9th March 2013 the Museu Picasso celebrates its 50th anniversary. For this reason the team of the museum is working on various projects that allow us to share the trajectory of the museum with the citizens, and in this way, to commemorate the event and to have a solid foundation on which the museum of the 21st century will be constructed, keeping the legacy of the artist alive.
The different projects that are being developed are based around three main concepts that help us understand the museum: its genesis, its collection and the major exhibitions held during its half century of life.
Taking these notions as the main vertebral axes, three documental exhibitions have been programmed, that will be held one after the other, in such a way that they become a unique narration.

The first exhibition, about its origins, will open to the public on March 9th and will close on June 9th; the second, related to the 50 years of the Collection, will go from July 4th to the October 20th; and the last one, which will make a reflection about the 50 years of exhibitions, will be on view from the November 14th, closing on February 16th 2014. Each of them, despite being pieces of a unique hisstory, will have the necessary differentiating characteristics so as to explain each theme.

Contra Tàpies

© 2002, Martí Gasull
"Contra Tàpies" is a way of approaching Antoni Tàpies work escaping the myths generated by him or even his words. To do this, the exhibition is put together in three different spheres: firstly a chronological run through his work inserted in different and unusual genealogies; secondly, through five specific projects created by five artists who question Tàpies from his biography and public dimension, and finally, a compilation of Tàpies works which do not look like his and which are shown transfigured in many other artists. The exhibition is completed with unpublished documentary material.

La casa dels entremesos

The wealth of traditional Catalan folk culture is so extensive that the Coordinadora de Colles de Gegants i Bestiari de Ciutat Vella has created a specific centre of production and dissemination. This is the Casa dels Entremesos, a venture that provides the public with festive imaginary (giants, dwarfs, bestiary), the world of fire (devils, jugglers, fire bestiary) without forgetting traditional Catalan dance and music. This cultural centre located in Plaça de les Beates 2 in Barcelona, takes its name from the accommodation which in 1439 was established by Royal Decree for the maintenance and preservation of giant figures which took part in Barcelona festivals. Many centuries later, the New Casa dels Entremesos provides workshops and courses, conferences, concerts, theme exhibitions, a library and many other activities programmed throughout the year, with the aim of recuperating and bringing one of the most unique traditions of our country closer to the public.
