The Park Güell was designed as a garden city, but has become a public park. This is due to the fact that Gaudí and Güell’s idea of turning it into a mini city never worked out: in fact they were the only two people that lived there. This route provides visitors with an overview of the park’s history and how the initial project changed and was adapted to the circumstances of the time.

Carmen-Bizet

This famous opera-comique in four acts, with libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy and music by Georges Bizet, is based on a novel written by Prosper Merimée. It premiered in Paris on 3 March 1875. It didn’t reach Spain until 1881. Although it is an opera-comique, Carmen also has a tragic side to it and well defined characters that reach their full splendour thanks to melodic and harmonic music, which is definitely the key factor for this piece to continue being as successful as it always was.

America, Ultra Unknown Land

The American geography has unique characteristics. Its fifteen thousand kilometres from north to south comprise a diversity which is impossible to find in any other continent. Jungles, desserts, snow, frozen coastlines and warm beaches, volcanoes and immense deltas, vast mountain ranges and never-ending prairies. This natural diversity forms a human and ethnological mosaic of significant contrasts which becomes a cultural and migration flow which overcomes borders and affects the entire world, including Europe. However, despites its great influence, America is still a mystery for many of us.

Gòtic al MNAC

On May 27th, the MNAC reopens the Gothic art rooms after extensive reorganisation involving a thorough review of the presentation of the works so as to offer innovative staging and interpretation.
In the process, the presentation by subject matter of the old museography has been eliminated and the work is now displayed in a historical and artistic sequence and also according to its place of origin. With the new arrangement, the most important items in the collection stand out in the visit. In addition, some works have been moved with the object of exhibiting them in better conditions, focusing attention to bring visitors the greatest possible enjoyment.
Another fundamental aspect of the new presentation is the lighting. The works are now lit directly, thereby revealing the full wealth of chromatic values and textures.
The largest altarpieces, like the Virgin from Sigena or the Virgin of the 'Consellers', have been attached to metal structures to raise them off the ground and separate them from the wall. Apart from the advantages of this solution from the point of view of preventive conservation, it also means that visitors can see the back of the structure and appreciate the woodwork construction.
The reorganisation, which has lasted almost half a year and extends to the Renaissance rooms, the Cambó Bequest and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, is intended to make the visit more enjoyable, comfortable and profitable, creating the best possible conditions in which to appreciate the works and their aesthetic, historical and cultural values.

Recycling. The great Cycle.

On a large scale, the debate regarding the protection of the environment is on everyone’s agenda, although it seems hard to reach agreements regarding protocols in favour of preserving the planet. This cycle is focused on three big “R”, essential to maintain a sustainable behaviour: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The main exhibition explains the process of transforming four types of domestic residue and one industrial, in order to make people more aware of the importance of small everyday actions.

Cerdà and Barcelona. The first metropolis, 1853-1897.

When Ildefons Cerdà created the Eixample, the iconic grid which put the urban plans of the city in order, he didn’t just draw a plan on paper. This exhibition shows the complexity of his work: how for more than forty four years the engineer Cerdà ingeniously solved all the problems and challenges which arose during the development of the magnificent work of widening the streets outside the walls of the up until then small Barcelona. Also, the exhibition gives more context to the works of Cerdà during his era, times during which an entrepreneurial fever possessed the urban society, nurtured by the enthusiasm of the industrial revolution, all within the framework of the liberal regime. The exhibition not only shows the expertise of the great engineer known as Ildefons Cerdà, but it also takes us back to the time during which the first metropolis was created.

Maria Bofill and the art of Porcelain.

Maria Bofill is one of the most international Catalonian modern sculptresses. More so, she is probably the only internationally acclaimed Catalonian sculptress, and she deserved this recognition. Dedicated completely to porcelain, her work is a reflection of small format objects and imaginary or urban sceneries. Bofill has researched the many shapes and forms of porcelain, from the most primitive expression, to those which are more evolved such as modern architectural forms. Her delicate and elegant pieces, of incredible beauty, progressively bereft of colours, are well worth a visit.

Prague, Paris, Barcelona. Photographic Modernity from 1918 to 1948

Pere Català Pic. Vaso de Cristal (Crystal Glass)
The avant-garde photography fought against the stigma of being a mere representation of reality experimenting an artistic revolution that took place mostly in Prague and Paris. This movement arrived to Catalonia through European illustrated magazines and promoted photographers such as Pere Català Pic, Emili Godes, Josep Sala or Josep Masana to start a brilliant career in the field of photographic experimentation. The ?Prague, Paris, Barcelona. Photographic Modernity from 1918 to 1948? exhibition shows the works of the most relevant photographers from these three cultural nucleuses. A unique opportunity to go over the technical, creative and formal innovations that took place in photography during the period between wars.
